Social media marketing is not about marketing with little or no effort. Social media is about social networking, and by that, it means you have to be social! Through social interactions, you can create relationships with your prospective customers, thus creating opportunities for you to educate them on your products or services. Remember, baby steps. This type of marketing takes time, consistency, and genuine interest in creating that relationship with your consumers – this is key to the success of your social marketing efforts. If you’re not interested in doing this yourself, or if you just don’t have time, there are great companies to help you… like Newera!

When it comes to social media marketing, there are no written rules but we highly suggest taking the time to educate yourself on the unwritten guidelines and best practices. The one constant in any business marketing effort holds true: if you’re going to do it, do it well or you can cause more harm than good.

To get the ball rolling, we wanted to share some simple Social Media Marketing Do’s and Don’ts:

Don’t spam: This has become a big problem within the social networks. Remember, no one takes interest in companies that spam (this also includes more recent forms of spam, like posting on your Facebook page twenty times a day – don’t overdo it!) Try to share helpful relevant content. You can pepper in some sales, but if all you do is sell, you will undoubtedly be ignored by your social network.

Be social: Always keep in mind that you must build a relationship with the users in your social network in order to make them comfortable with purchasing from you.

Consistency is key: This goes along with being social. If you are going to make the commitment to use these powerful tools you must stick with it. Creating a social presence, then not properly managing that presence, tells the users in your social network that you’re not present and engaged with them – ie: that they’re not important to you.

Don’t be a social snob: Social media marketing is all about being… social! It’s not always all about you… you must play well with others! By being social with others, you can effectively get your business in front of them and their social networks (networks full of other consumers!) Cross promote, Share, Like, Comment, and highlight each others social marketing efforts and accomplishments. Help other business owners – its about community! Pay it forward!

Remember, social media marketing is a new and unique approach to marketing, and you must put in the effort to get the results you want!
